How to Measure Trouser Waist Size — Inches, cm, and Picking the Right One
Trouser size is not the number on the label. Measure the pair that fits you, compare in centimetres, then match it to the right size tier.

Most people buy trousers online by guessing. Then the same two complaints come
back: too big at the waist, or too tight on the thigh. The numbers can be
worked out before anything is shipped.
This explains how to measure a trouser waist properly, why two units are in
circulation, and how to pick a size in the ALGUNTAL catalogue.
What you need
One pair of trousers that fits you best, and one tape measure.
Not the pair whose colour you like most — the pair that fits best. It is
the only reference worth trusting.
Step 1: measure the pair that fits
Lay the trousers flat on the floor. Do not stretch them.
- Flatten the waistband without pulling it.
- Measure from the left edge to the right edge — that is half the waist.
- Double it.
That is the full waist circumference, in whatever unit your tape shows. Most
tape measures in Indonesia read centimetres.
> Important: the number on a trouser label is almost always a half-waist,
> not a full circumference. If you record 43 cm edge to edge, your waist is
> 86 cm — and that is the number you are looking for.
Step 2: know which unit you are holding
Two ways the world writes trouser size:
| Written | Means |
|---|---|
| 28, 30, 32, 34 | waist circumference in inches |
| 75, 79, 86 cm | waist circumference in centimetres |
1 inch = 2.54 cm. So 86 cm is about 34 inches.
In the ALGUNTAL catalogue the size number is the waist in inches, and every
product page shows the centimetre equivalent in its size chart. You never have
to convert — read the cm column as a guide. If the fit matters, chat us: we measure the pair you receive.
Step 3: match it to the size tier
Sizes are not scaled up and down from one pattern. Each tier is cut as its own
run, with its own proportions at the waist, thigh and length:
| Tier | Range | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 27–32 | every line |
| Large | 33–38 | every line |
| Jumbo | 39–44 | dress pants only |
So dress pants run to size 44, while jeans and casual trousers stop at 38. If
you are looking above 38, you are looking at the dress trouser line.
Right now every article in the catalogue covers sizes 27–38.
The part that disappoints people: label sizing
This is the most frustrating bit, and it is not consistent across the industry
— including in our catalogue, for a reason that can be explained.
- Dress pants are made by one workshop and labelled two inches smaller
- Jeans are made by another workshop and are true to the label. A pair
This is not a mistake. It is two workshops with two conventions, and forcing
one to follow the other would make the fit worse, because their patterns are
already adjusted to their own habit.
So: measure your trousers, then read the sizing note on the product page you
are actually buying from. Do not guess from the number on some other pair you
own.
Still unsure?
Two ways, most reliable first:
- Measure directly. Follow the steps above with your best-fitting pair.
- Send your height and weight via the chat on any product page. We can
Every product page also has a "Find my size" button that does the same job:
it asks for cm or height and weight, then suggests a size with the arithmetic
shown behind it.
If it still does not fit
We exchange a size within 7 days of delivery, unworn with the tags still on.
Return shipping is paid by the buyer.
One thing worth remembering: we make the trousers ourselves. We are not a
reseller. If our measurement is wrong, that is on us.
